Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Gold Delorean

Amex Catalogue CoverThere were originally going to be 100 Gold Deloreans to be produced in 1981 for the American Express Christmas Catalogue, but only two were made; one with saddle interior and one with black interior.

The Deloreans were offered to American Express Gold cardholders,Amex Catalogue appearing in the December 1979 American Express catalog. Each gold-plated Delorean was priced at $85,000, which was a lot for 1979. Insurance rates at the time came to approximately $1,000 a month because a small door ding had a potential repair cost of $24,000!

The third Gold Delorean was the last Delorean to be produced ( VIN 20105). It was built using spare parts made from the first two Gold Deloreans encase anything happened to those ones.

24 karat Gold DeloreanThe first 24k 1981 gold Delorean is currently located in the National Automobile Museum in Reno Nevada. Sherwood Marshall donated the gold Delorean to the museum for insurance reasons.

The second 24k 1981 gold-plated Delorean, VIN 4301, was sold to a Texas banker in Snyder Texas. This gold Delorean has black interior. The gold-plated Delorean sits in a locked glass showcase in the lobby of the Snyder National Bank and has 0 miles and has never had gas put into it.

The third 24k 1983 gold Delorean, VIN 20105, is an automatic with tan “saddle” leather interior. This gold Delorean was assembled on Christmas eve 1982 and was offered in a promotional drawing by a department store and is currently privately owned by a man in Maryland

The gold Deloreans now have a estimated value at $125,000.00

Pretty cool vintage commercial but I’d rather have the Delorean even if it does always break.

Family Ties Stars Gather For Reunion

This was on yesterday morning on NBC. MSNBC put the video up online already. It was great to see the cast back together again, and Michael J. Fox looks to be in better health than when I saw him on TV last. This was the first time the principal cast of Family Ties all gathered in 18 years.

Christopher Lloyd reprises the role of Doc Brown in two new DIRECTV commercials. Christopher Lloyd’s performance was great and he slipped right back into the role of Doc Brown as if the commercial was made in 1985.

Low Mileage Deloreans

When finding a reliable Delorean to buy you want to steer away from the Low mileage Deloreans. With most cars the lower the miles the better, but this isn’t the case with Deloreans. There are many Deloreans with very low miles still available ranging from 50 to 5,000 miles.

Unless you plan to replace and restore the car entirely a low mile Delorean is not for you.  Besides the usual items that will needed to be replaced when you buy a used car, you can count on replacing the tires because they will be dry-rotted with flat spots, replacing the entire fuel system, all the hoses, performing necessary safety updates, and lots more.

The reason a mid to high mile Delorean is a better buy is because these changes do not need to be made because the car has been driven over the years and will be able to be driven with confidence. If you don’t mind investing the time, energy, cost in restoring a low miles Delorean then you should definitely purchase one.

Ordered Delorean Parts

Ordered lots of stuff from Delorean.com including new leather seats, bulbs, leds, identification labels, and some other misc stuff to restore the Delorean.

The Delorean is running great and is so much fun to drive. Can’t wait to get the new seats in, fix headliner, and install the other Delorean parts.

Replaced Delorean Clutch Line

Today I replaced the Delorean clutch line. Overall it was not a difficult task but it was a major pain at the same time. The total time to complete the project was 3 hrs 10 minutes.  The hardest part was getting to the bleed screw and getting the clear tubing on the bleed screw. The bleed screw is just in a very ackward location and took us a very long time to get that part of the project done.

Brief Delorean Clutch Line Replacement Tutorial

Open the bonnet and remove the screws for the plastic cover near where you fill up your gas tank. This will give you access to the master cylinder where the clutch line is. The original Delorean clutch line is a black plastic hose. Unscrew it and brake fluid will pour out of it. Then have the car jacked up and pull the old line out and there is a few zip ties that need to be cut.  The slave cylinder is directly above the transmission. Have the car still jacked up from the back tire and come in from the rear.

This also took a fair bit of time to get the other part of the hose disconnected and new part connected. Connect new stainless steel braided clutch line, unscrew bleed screw put on the clear hose. Pour brake fluid evenly, pump clutch wait for bubble (need 2 people). Close bleed screw. Put the clutch line back into its cover a few zip ties will be a good idea. Close back up the panel in the bonnet.

And it is as simple as that. I’ll update this post with some pictures.

After it was all done it felt like a new car. Shifts were so much more smoother with no grinding. This was a much needed upgrade.

Delorean With Dead Battery

Left a light on for a few days and it killed the battery.  There is a little juice left but not enough to start the car. My pal is most likely coming over tommorow to give me a jump and also replace my clutch line that has been sitting on my desk for the past 2 weeks.

The car should hopefully be good to go after that. Strongly considering trading the Delorean in for a Cayman. I’ll probably clean it up and just see what they want to offer, if they even accpt a Delorean as a trade-in.

Delorean With Blue Stripe

I was driving on I-95 in South Florida between the Oakland and Commercial exit this morning at 8:25 AM when I saw it; A Delorean with a blue stripe instead of the normal black stripe that some Deloreans have.

The guy was wearing a suit and his hand was outside the tiny window with a cigarette in his hand. I wish I had quick reflexes to take a picture but couldn’t. Nevertheless it was a great to see another Delorean but I have to say i wasn’t feeling the blue stripe.

J In Michael J. Fox?

(1) Comments

I like to think of myself as a “Know It All” of anything back to the future related including the cast. I got stumped yesterday when someone asked me what does the J stand for in Michael J. Fox. After some quick research i found out that Michael J. Fox originally intended to use the name “Michael Fox” but when he registered for the Screen Actors Guild he had to pick a new name because they do not allow duplicate registration names.

His middle name is Andrew and did not like the sound of Michael A. Fox and wanted to avoid the Canadian stereotypes. He settled on “J” which references actor Michael J. Pollard. Sometimes he jokes around and says the J stands for “Jenius” or “Jenuine”
