After watching the movie “A Scanner Darkly”, I have became very interested in Interpolated Rotoscope. Rotoscoping is an animation technique in which the animators trace over film to create animated films. The original image was an HD image with dimensions of 8,000 by 4,500. This one frame took me about 7 hours to finish. If I tried to make the entire back to the future movie to be rotoscoped by myself it would probably take over 10 years. The process requires me to actually use the pencil and paint brush tool in Photoshop and draw right on top of the film image. I am going to continue rotoscoping memorable images from the movie and maybe even create a short video of the scene below.
After I create a few rotoscoped images I am going to have one printed and framed. If people were interested I could offer it for sale on bttfblog.com

I really enjoyed “A Scanner Darkly”. And this frame from BTTF looks really cool. I had no idea that rotoscoping takes such a long time, I used to think the images are altered automatically using Photoshop plugins depending on picture brightness and contrast, rather than doing it manually using paint tools in Photoshop. Great work..
After they finished filming “A Scanner Darkly” it took 30 people working 5 hours a day 18 months to finish the rotoscoping.
Photoshop makes the task simplier. Without using photoshop it would of probably taken 20 hours to finish.
Put me on the list - I definitely want one. How about the DeLorean flying in front of Biff’s Pleasure Paradise from part II?
The A Scanner Darkly film used the software rotoshop which was developed by Bob Sabiston. Rotoshop uses the technique interpolated rotoscoping. The software was developed in order to do extremely lifelike hand-drawn animation - specifically, to animate the types of expressions and gestures people make that ordinarily would not be scripted into someone’s film. Every person has minute speech and movement characteristics that uniquely identifies him or her. This type of animation emphasizes these characteristics.
Zeniamai, The makers of a scanner darkly had special programs to make the process faster but it still took them over 4 hours for each frame to be made.
